A bedroom makeover should be health-promoting as well as creating a beautiful sleeping environment for the owner.

Choose colors that are soothing and calming, such as shades of blues, green and mauve. Vibrant, stimulating colors like red or orange should be reserved for other rooms in the home.

Linens should be in muted shades, to help lull the sleeper into a peaceful slumber. Accent colors to break up the monochromatic look can be introduced in the form of smaller items, such as pillows or decorative pieces.

Lighting should be indirect, to give the room a “glow”, rather than bathing it with bright light. Reading or task lights should be placed strategically, allowing the occupant to turn them on or off, as needed.

The bed should be positioned to allow the owner to sleep without facing the windows directly, if at all possible, to avoid being awakened by the glare of sunlight streaming in in the morning. Old flattened pillows do not belong in a bedroom makeover, and should be replaced with new, fluffed-up pillows, suitable for both sleeping and decorating.

Side tables beside the bed are practical and visually appealing, if space and room layout allow, as the lend a nice, symmetrical look to the entire bed setting. Flowers or shaded lamps act as great toppers for side tables.

Family photos, which most interior designers will leave out of busy areas where guests tend to gather, certainly belong in the bedroom, if the owner so desires, as they bring a warm, personal touch that is welcome in this part of the home.

A settee at the foot of the bed, accessorized with pillows or throws to match the decor anchors the bed and adds a nice, cozy touch.

A bedroom makeover can create a visually-pleasing scene which is nice to fall asleep in, and even more pleasant to wake up to.
