Decorating With Interior Brick

As far as surfaces go, interior brick has a lot to offer – it brings instant texture, makes a great insulator, requires minimal maintenance and can add color to complement the rest of the space.

Interior brick can be found on walls, as fireplace mantle material, on the floor, and these days, is seeing more and more use in bathrooms for that “outdoor” feel.

Exposed brick has a charm all its own, giving your home that casual outdoor look that can be country or urban in feel — depending on how you accessorize around it.

But what about if you want the interior brick surfaces in your home to “disappear”?  This is entirely possible if you have colored brick that was installed many moons ago and no longer coordinates with the colors inside your home. Or if you are looking to create a totally different type of “ambience” than the one you now have in the space.

Well, quite simply, you can paint it!  You can use a shade of paint that blends with your other walls to paint an interior brick wall to make it “recede’ or blend in with the rest of your walls.  Or you can paint it a shade slightly more intense than the other walls and use it like a feature wall.

Interior brick walls have built-in grooves, so how about an antiquing paint technique that leaves a darker shade of paint within the grooves while leaving the exposed sides of the brick face a lighter shade?  This would result in a very interesting textured, or even patterned, design.
